As a way to monitor their growth, all captive manatees are measured during their regular physical exams. In the picture below, you can see how large a manatee is compared to a person. The last time they were measured, Hugh was 9.4 feet long and Buffett was 9.8 feet long.
Hugh and Buffett remain at their stations, either ventral up or dorsal up, while a cloth tape measure is threaded around their bodies. Hugh and Buffett are routinely measured for length (snout to paddle), and four girth measurements at the axillary, umbilicus, anus, and peduncal.
