1999:
|
A three week block of ship time (September 9 - 30, 1999) was scheduled aboard the R/V Pelican to conduct research pertaining to blooms of the red tide organism Karenia brevis.
Process A:
Process A, 1999 was conducted between Sept. 9 and 14. Hydrographic data, K. brevis abundance, particle size distributions and filters for spectral absorption and pigment analyses were collected at a number of stations along the west coast of Florida. Due to Hurricane Floyd this cruise was cut short by two days.
Process B:
The persistence of a bloom in the panhandle of Florida during September, 1999 warranted a change in the survey area for Process B. Since the focus for this leg of the cruise was the fate and effects of toxins, high cell abundances were required. High abundances of K. brevis were identified in the waters near Panama City, FL and the R/V Pelican conducted a survey of that region.
Process C:
The high abundance of K. brevis cells found in the panhandle during Process B dictated the location of the final week of cruises. A more biological research approach was taken during Process C, 1999 (September 23-30) and although some general survey work was conducted, the ship attempted to follow a particular patch of K. brevis.
