Sawfish listed as Endangered on US Endangered Species List

On April 1st, 2003, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) published the final rule placing the smalltooth sawfish on the US Endangered Species List. The announcement of the listing was made at Mote Marine Laboratory (MML) in a joint press conference by NMFS, MML and The Ocean Conservancy (TOC).

The listing of smalltooth sawfish recognizes the depleted state of the population and provides a framework for developing conservation actions. The listing provides protection for sawfish throughout the USA. NMFS hopes to develop a species recovery plan within a year.
