Elasmobranch Behavioral Ecology

  • Program Manager: Dr. Michelle Heupel
  • Staff Biologist: Beau Yeiser
  • Graduate students: Angela Barker (University of South Florida), Tobey Curtis (University of Florida), Christina Conrath (Virginia Institute of Marine Science)

The Elasmobranch Behavioral Ecology Program examines the behavior, movement patterns and habitat use of sharks and rays.

Current projects focus on:

  • Examination of movement patterns, habitat use and intraspecific interactions of five shark species within a coastal estuary
  • Examination of movement patterns, habitat use and feeding ecology of two ray species
  • Use of river habitats as nursery grounds for juvenile bull sharks
  • The response of elasmobranchs to changes in environmental variables such as temperature and salinity
