Internship or REU?

Students interested in interning for the CSR in the summer have expressed some confusion regarding which of the two programs are best suited for their needs. Here is a quick comparison of the two programs to assist you in making this decision:

Internships

  • Applications accepted year-round
  • Application deadline flexible
  • Current and graduated students
  • Flexible eligibility requirements
  • Flexible dates and duration
  • 2nd to 4th year students preferred
  • 4-6 positions in CSR per term
  • Competitive (~10-15 applications/term)
  • Unpaid (some scholarships available)
  • Field and/or lab work
  • Paper requirement
  • Oral presentation requirement (CSR-wide)

REU

  • Applications for Summer only
  • Strict deadline (mid-March)
  • Current students only
  • Specific requirements (GPA, etc.)
  • 10-week period, set dates
  • 3rd to 4th year students preferred
  • Usually 2-3 CSR positions per summer
  • Highly competitive (>125 applications in Yr1)
  • Paid (stipend, housing, travel)
  • Field and/or lab work
  • Weekly meetings
  • Field trips
  • Independent research project
  • Research proposal requirement
  • Written paper requirement
  • Oral presentation requirement (lab-wide)
  • Research poster requirement
  • Presentation at national conference

As shown above, the REU program offers financial support for selected participants.  However, it is also much more competitive than the standard internship program and quite a bit more demanding due to additional requirements.

Can I apply for both?

Students who meet the appropriate requirements are eligible to submit applications for both programs.  If you wish to do so, please submit full applications for each program separately.
