Sea Turtle Nesting

The official nesting/hatching season for the gulf coast of Florida is May through October. Female turtles begin nesting between 25 to 50 years of age. They return to their natal beaches every few years to deposit an average of three to five nests during the nesting season.

The female turtle crawls ashore and uses her rear flippers to dig an egg cavity, into which she deposits approximately 100 leathery, ping-pong ball-sized eggs. After covering the nest with sand, she enters the ocean, never to return to her young. She leaves behind a distinctively shaped crawl that resembles the trail of a small tractor tire.
