Sea turtles receive protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) as well as Florida statutes (370.12). Violations defined by ESA include harassing a nesting female, disturbing nests, non-permitted possession of any live or dead turtle parts and unauthorized research. Penalties include stiff fines and/or imprisonment.
