Collaborations
An essential component of the Fisheries Habitat Ecology Program is to
collaborate with researchers at government and academic institutions on
projects of applied ecological research.
Our first, and essential, collaboration is with the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Commission, Florida Marine Research Institute, Fisheries
Independent Monitoring program. We are collaborating with FMRI/FIM to
conduct field research that will augment their ongoing sampling in
Charlotte Harbor. We are also jointly examining aspects of their
database to provide historical context to our current collaborative
projects. An important product of this aspect of the research strategy
is the establishment of system-based reference points that can be used
in determining targets of resource management and evaluating the health
of the system. This is based on the premise that a functional system is
more likely to support sustainable fisheries.
We are also collaborating with Florida Department of Environmental
Protection to examine whether wetland restoration will influence the use
of upland mangrove creeks by juvenile fishes. We are using a
Before-After-Control-Impact sampling design to address this question.
Our collaboration with the Mote Landscape Ecology Program entails
assessing use of continuous and patchy seagrass habitats by fishes and
estimating impacts of changes in water flow on these habitats and
associated fishes. This research will address the potential impact of
anthropogenic changes in quantity, quality, and source of freshwater
flow on estuarine habitats and associated fishes.
