Commercial Shrimp Demonstration Project Nursery and Growout

Currently construction of the indoor and outdoor growout production systems is being completed.  Each of the four production raceways is 100 m3 will be used to culture Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific White Shrimp) at a target biomass load of 5 kg/m2 which will result in a harvest of 4,400 lbs of shrimp after 180 days. Once the first production cycle is complete, targeted for June 2005, production data will be analyzed to fine tune the system for the second production run.  The second production will target a production level of 10 kg/m2 resulting in a harvest of 8,800 lbs of market size (26-30 count shrimp).

The shrimp program will be examining the growout production results from raceway systems housed in a greenhouse, as well as raceway systems housed inside a building (shown to the right).  The building and greenhouse production techniques tested here will be compared to determine the most economical and environmentally sustainable production modes.  Once determined, the selected production mode will be applied on a commercial scale (20,000 square foot production system) on site in 2006.

The wooden frames in the photograph above will be covered with a liner and the recirculating filtration units will be plumbed in place.  When construction the raceways is complete, they will be filled with water and stocked with shrimp. The current estimated completion date for this building is Spring 2005.
