Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium - Sarasota, Florida

APPLIED TECHNIQUES IN RESTORATION ECOLOGY
(August 8-10, 2007)

A course for professional scientists and graduate students interested in successional theory and practical reef restoration techniques.

Instructor: Thomas Cuba, Ph.D., Delta-Seven Inc.

This 2½ day workshop is a companion to the annual coral disease course and is intended to stimulate students to explore methods of assisted recovery and to recognize when assistance may not be required. Lectures on successional theory will include identifying the functional mechanisms of succession. Field work will be used to demonstrate theoretical and practical aspects of succession and will include the observation of recolonization of space opened up by black band disease, the colonization and microhabitat selection of substrate exposed for known lengths of time, and comparisons to undamaged assemblages. This course will be limited to 6 individuals.

Prerequisites: College-level biology courses are required, and courses in invertebrate zoology, microbiology, ecology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, histology, or marine sciences will be very helpful. SCUBA certification is required, and applicants will need to meet Mote's standards for "temporary diver" status. Click here to view Mote's policies and requirements for obtaining clearance to dive.

Costs: The course fee of $250 includes all course materials, accommodations, meals (dinner, 8/8 through breakfast on 8/10), boat costs, SCUBA tanks and weights. Participants should bring their own mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, BCD, and weight belt (rentals can be arranged if required). With advanced notice, pick up and drop off at the Key West International Airport by Mote staff can be arranged.
