MARINE MICROBIOLOGY PROGRAM

Manager - Kimberly Ritchie, Ph.D.

The study of microorganisms and their role in the marine environment.
Current projects include:

Microbial symbionts of marine invertebrates and their role in host health. Potential roles examined include antibiotic production, UV resistance, and production of compounds beneficial to the host in prevention of stress and disease.

Ecology of marine invertebrate diseases. In addition to potential
pathogen identification, present research includes the determination of
environmental and intrinsic factors that influence disease. These
studies rely on field methods, aquaria studies, and standard
microbiological and molecular genetic approaches in the determination of
the onset of pathogenesis, pathogen source, and potential pathogenic
mechanisms.

Microbial associates of red tide aerosol. Marine microbial associates of
red tide may aerosolize in a manner similar to the red tide toxin,
brevotoxin. These microbial associates may act as opportunistic
pathogens in humans, making characterization of these communities in
collaboration with the Center for Ecotoxicology a current goal of this
program.
